...bringing stone masonry and carving back to the people...
...bringing it back within the reach of a working man's purse, because it was the working man -(mason) who created it all in the first place... that is what we do!
Roluna Stone is a new family business founded by me; Mike Viaene.
I was born in Belgium close to the City of Gent where I discovered the beautiful and ancient craft of stone masonry.
There I learned and developed the skills to restore old -and produce new architectural masonry which then resulted in further education and experience in carving and sculpting.
This lovely artisan practise is slowly disappearing due to ever increasing industrial manufacturing and modern day machinery
Staying true to hand crafted stones is my passion and I work hard to keep the ancient hammer knocking.
I go back to basics by using hand tools and simple standard stone masonry equipment.
There are no industrial machines for mass production as these can often be very impersonal. They come with expensive bills, are high in maintenance and form a strain on the environment.
All of this allows me to keep the prices down to a minimum and keep every project individual.
Recycling is dear to my heart and therefore I prefer to work with reclaimed stones or off-cuts, whenever possible
These stones however are carefully examined to ensure the quality is no less than newly quarried stone.
This gives the advantage of not having the costs to quarry a stone, transport it and then pre-cut the stone to specific measurements !
Instead I work with what we have and this reversed process results in the most amazing creations, just like one makes the best meal with the leftovers from the fridge...
The workshop is based at the Tweedside trading estate in Berwick upon tweed.Situated at the top of the road where Howdens and Juss Roll are.
I specialise in Memorials, Headstones and Sculpures.
